Solar carport

Utilization

The photovoltaic shelter not only offers protection from the rain and the sun’s rays to parked cars, but also provides energy for the whole day transforming solar radiation into electricity.

The energy produced can be used to:

  • Supply the local power grid
  • Supply users located far from the power supply
  • Supply of recharging points of electric cars
  • Charge accumulator battery, (of stationary or automotive type).

The PV shelter for two parking places (the minimum modular element of the system) has the dimensions of about 5×5 meters, and an installed capacity, depending on type of installation, which varies from 2.9 kWp to 3.8 kWp. To improve the solar radiation efficiency and the washing effect of rain, the roof is slightly angled. Consequently, for optimal production, in the project must be taken into account its orientation. It should also avoid shadowing of nearby buildings or trees.

PV shelter for parkings standard features

The photovoltaic carport can be used in the so called park-and-ride facilities, where the drivers can leave their cars and rent conventional electric cars to reach the city centers subject to restrictions on emissions. In this way the solar shelter becomes the fundamental generating part of a zero emission urban mobility system.

In fact photovoltaic systems produces no emissions of any kind as well as the electric car rented. The electrical energy generated is given to the network after being accounted or used to charge accumulator batteries for electric cars . Practically, the system uses the city’s power grid as a buffer, solar energy is sent to the grid from which is then taken when the electric car is connected to the charging point.

The photovoltaic shelters are completely modular and can be aggregated to each other to cover parking lots of any size. Moreover, they contribute effectively to a better perception of the urban space from the point of view of environmental sustainability. They contribute to protect the car from solar radiation and bad weather, and at the same time allows to bring direct and indirect gains to the benefit of the private citizen as well as for the public body.

The system does not tend to hide or distort the photovoltaic modules, but on the contrary it emphasizes the ornamental character using double-glazed modules that make the cells also visible from below. The reduced number of support pillars of the roof allows to simplify the design of the parking lot and allows to the cars an extreme easy handling.
